Manual Meditation
Touch awareness practice
This is a mindful practice developed by Matthias Schwenteck, intimacy coach, consciousness researcher and founder of the Somatic Consent Academy.
In just a few minutes, this meditation shifts the nervous system into a state of social engagement, slows down racing thoughts and helps regain grounding — both in individual and group practice.
Matthias calls this technique "Waking Up the Hands" because it increases what we can notice through the sense of touch.
With regular practice, hands transition from being unconsciously active — to full mindfulness and the ability to receive subtle sensations. This experience teaches not only feeling, but also deeper contact with oneself and the environment.
💫 Benefits of the practice:
- ✓Regulates breathing and heart rate
- ✓Slows brain waves
- ✓Activates the parasympathetic system (regeneration, relaxation)
- ✓Increases oxytocin release (bonding hormone)
- ✓Lowers cortisol and adrenaline levels
- ✓Restores contact with the body and present moment
Before you start the practice:
- 1
Pick up any object that fits easily in your hand (e.g. a stone, shell, piece of fabric, wooden bead).
- 2
Sit or lie down comfortably.
- 3
Close your eyes and pay attention to the weight, temperature and texture of the object.
- 4
Begin the meditation following the audio instructions.
- 5
Let your hands "wake up" — move them slowly, observing the sensations.
